This presentation will provide an overview of a variety of assistive technologies. Brief demos of text-to-speech, screen reading software, speech-to-text, and alternative inputs will be provided. It will highlight how to implement specific web accessibility strategies such as headings, alternative text, links, and lists.   Demonstrations will highlight the impact web accessibility strategies have on the user experience. For example, a webpage without headings cannot be easily navigated using screen reading or voice command software, yet that same page is far more usable with those assistive technologies when headings are included.

Learning Goals

  • Identify the different assistive technologies people with disabilities use to access the web.
  • Can apply foundational web accessibility strategies to websites and documents.
